Day 1 - Arrival
Overnight stay in Reykjavik after a transfer from the airport, this is the best time to explore the capital after settling in to your accommodation
Day 2 – Approximate mileage: 186 miles
In the morning you are traveling from Reykjavik to the Pingvellir National Park, a place packed with historical attractions from Iceland’s Viking. Afterwards you are visiting the Geysur hot springs for a swim; these springs are home to the towering “Gullfoss” Golden Waterfall, a must-see site during your family self drive holiday in Iceland. Your family ends the day at the Kerid Crater before traveling south for an overnight stay.
Optional Activities: Slakki Family Zoo, Horseback riding at Eldhestar farm.
Day 3 – Approximate mileage: 217 miles
Today is all about exploring the Black Sand Beaches, Lava Fields and Glaciers of the South Shore. During the drive you will experience breathtaking views of Iceland’s colorful landscape. Stopping off at the spectacular Seljalandsfoss waterfalls you will be able to walk around behind them and enjoy a unique experience. You will also have chance to explore the Black Sand beaches around Vik which are close to the largest Glaciers in the Atlantic Ocean.
Optional Activities: Boat tour on Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon, Glacier hike in Skaftafell area, Tractor ride to Ingolfshofdi cape
Day 4 – Approximate mileage: 174 miles
Today your family will be driving along the volcanic landscapes with breathtaking views of the East Fjord and its Mountains. You will be traveling through the regions pretty fishing villages and we recommend taking a boat trip around the Papey Islands. These islands are home to thousands of Puffins who nest during the summer. The day ends in the colorful forest area of Hallormstadur. Another perfect end to your family adventure holiday in Iceland.
Optional activities: The new family friendly thermal pool of Hofn, Boat tour to Papey Island, Petra's stone collection, Horseback riding in Hallormstadur.
Day 5 – Approximate mileage: 186 miles
The Möðrudalsöræfi highlands are a must-see area of Iceland. The region is renowned for its unique volcanic formations and views overlooking Lake Myvatn. Described as mystical by many visitors the colorful vegetation thrives in this sulfurous location. Your family will be driving to the Gooafoss “Of the Gods” Waterfall later in the day, these thundering falls are the largest in Iceland. This is where the tour ends before heading to Akureyri for the next two nights.
Optional Activities: Boat tour on Lagarfljot lake, Mývatn Nature Baths, Sigurgeirs Bird Museum
Day 6 - Day of Leisure in Akureyri and its surroundings
Relax and spend the day at your own leisure. There are numerous family attractions in Akureyri. Take a walk around the Botanical gardens, swim in the hot springs, go fishing or take a boat tour over to the Hrisey Islands to view whales in their natural environment. There is something for everyone in Akureyri your family will really enjoy this magical area of Iceland.
Optional activities: Sea Angling from Akureyri, Whale watching from Dalvik, Hrisey excursion, Grímsey excursion
Day 7 - Approximate mileage: 242 miles
Today you are driving through the region of Skagafjorour. This area is overflowing with traditional Icelandic architecture. Skagafjorour is renowned for horse breading and there is optional family horse riding and River rafting along the way. Continue to Hunaflloi bay before returning to Reykjavik in the evening.
Optional activities: River rafting in Skagafjörður, Horse riding in Skagafjörður, Seal museum and Seal sightseeing in Hvammstangi, Visit to the center for puppet arts in Borgarnes, Visit to the goat farm at Háafell, Reykjavik Zoo and Family Park
Day 8 - Departure day
Departure day. Sadly it is the end of your family self drive holiday in Iceland; but although we are sure you will be sad to leave you will undoubtedly be taking many great memories with you.
